Pearls and Oysters is a collection of experiences – mainly cooking, dining, and traveling – through the years.
My first foray into the world of “internet sharing” so to speak was back in 2002 when Bob and I created sbhonline.com. We had fallen madly, passionately in love with the island of St. Barths (not hard to do) and we started a website and discussion forum about the island. Keep in mind, these were relatively new days for the internet and we were amazed at how popular the site became.
It was the intensity of the positive reaction to the website and the participants’ extreme interest in the restaurants and chefs on the island that lead us to write a book entitled “Paradise Found: The people, restaurants and recipes of St. Barthélemy”.
It was a fun project and we meet so many charming and interesting restaurant people in connection with writing the book that we threw caution to the wind and renovated a 150 year old barn on our property into a fine dining destination restaurant (we had been lawyers prior to this turn of events). I know – nuts!!! We ran the Still River Cafe for six years (we got some nice press along the way – SRC Press) before moving to Boston with our awesome golden retriever Max.
Now we get to enjoying cooking and dining again BUT from the other side of the curtain!
Cheers!

Hi! I stumbled upon your site after searching for things re: St. Barths, and I am so glad I did! I currently live in Boston, and am heading to SBH at the end of the month with 30 other people to celebrate a couple’s anniversary. We are all in our 30’s-40’s. I would love to hear your input/advice/suggestions on food, things to do, beaches, etc in SBH. We currently have a few group things planned (dinner/drinks at Le Ti, Sunday at Nikki Beach, catamaran cruising one day). I also have a few dinner reservations for just my boyfriend and I (L’Isola, Le Sereno, and Eden Rock). Please let me know your thoughts, would love to hear!! Thanks in advance!
Hi Stephanie. Sounds like an amazing trip! Be sure to put Orega and L’Esprit on your list for dinner and Tamarin on your list for lunch. You have hit all the “slick” St. Barts places (Nikki, Eden Rock, L’Isola, Sereno) and you might find it fun to mix it up with a few local “island” places such as La Gloriette, Eddy’s, Santa Fe, L’Entracte and/or Pipiri. The variety is what makes the island special – otherwise you could just as well be in Miami. A late afternoon visit to Le Select for Ti punch is another must do and the bar at La Plage in St. Jean is also fun. Saline and Gouveneur are my favorite beaches as is the hike out to Colombier. Shopping is always a pleasure on SBH. If you have not seen the forums at sbhonline.com do check them out. Have a great trip!
Thanks for the response! Much appreciated 🙂
